Extensional mountain building along convergent plate boundary: Insights from the active Taiwan mountain belt

چکیده

Abstract Late brittle extension is a common feature in orogenic belts, and its role mountain building processes still the subject of debate. Its timing relationship with crustal thickening, topography, basin infill, rock exhumation are key importance determining whether it major factor development or merely causes near-surface secondary effects. We examined this question relation to active arc-continent collision Taiwan, studying structural evolution by integrating new critical geochronological results for tensile vein filling hinterland metamorphic terrane syn-collision deposition records. Acceleration molasse was found be coeval initiation structures at ca. 1.6 Ma, which long overdue as continental subduction started well before 6.5 Ma central northern Taiwan. The topographic Taiwan thus constructed when upper crust thickened prism turned extensional, orographic elevation relief prerequisites molasses production. Syn-collisional therefore proposed possible facilitator both augmented extrusive formation orography.

Feedback between mountain belt growth and plate convergence

While it is generally assumed that global plate motions are driven by the pattern of convection in the Earth’s mantle, the details of that link remain obscure. Bouyancy forces associated with subduction of cool, dense lithosphere at zones of plate convergence are thought to provide significant driving force, but the relative magnitudes of other driving and resisting forces are less clear, as ar...

Predicting landslides probabilities along mountain road in Taiwan

This paper gives a brief introduction on the background and current status of landslides along mountain roads in Taiwan and presents a detailed analysis based on the Gaussian Process model for predicting locations and occurrence times of future landslides using historical data. Based on inherent and man-made features of failed and not-failed slopes, locations of possible future landslides are p...

Mountain belt growth inferred from histories of past plate convergence: A new tectonic inverse problem

Past plate motions display a range of variability, including speedups and slowdowns that cannot easily be attributed to changes in mantle related driving forces. One key controlling factor for these variations is the surface topography at convergent margins, as previous modeling shows that the topographic load of large mountain belts consumes a significant amount of the driving forces available...
